William Kristol writing in the Weekly Standard Online:
Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana has issued an excellent statement on the health care bill. He calls it “Washington at its worst,” and especially urges “Senators with the privilege of representing the great state of Indiana, to give special consideration to Hoosier families and their values and reject this bill.” Pence continues, “The American people and the people of Indiana will remember which Senator stood for freedom and our values by opposing this legislation and which Senator followed the party line in support of a government takeover of health care.”
Here’s one way to help the people of Indiana remember: Mount a serious challenge to Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, who’s up in 2010. And here’s an obvious challenger: Mike Pence.
Sure, it’s a long shot (Bayh got 62% of the vote in 2004). But if voters are as upset as they may well be, Pence could make the race competitive. If he won, he’d be a leading possibility for national office as soon as 2012. If he loses, but runs a respectable race—which surely he’ll do—he’d have a good shot to succeed Mitch Daniels as governor in 2012.
It’s true Pence would be giving up a safe congressional seat and a position in the House leadership. But there are already good young Republicans—Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, et al.—in the House. An articulate, conservative first-term Senator who had knocked off a “safe” Democrat in a state Obama carried in 2008—that would be something…for Pence, for the GOP, and for conservatives nationwide.
I have been screaming this to my friends for months. This is a no-brainer. Why has no one brought this up? Unless Pence really wants to be speaker of the house or president, he really needs to do this.
What do we think is actually possible in Indiana in 2010? I actually think we can win against Bayh–he is scrambling so much to look conservative while voting for liberal causes that a high profile push should be able to unseat him.
How about the House?
1 – Visclosky should be safe
2 – Donnelly. Probably safe…but…
3 – Souder should be safe
4 – Buyer should be safe
5 – Burton is safe (or whoever wins the R primary)
6 – Pence is safe
7 – Carson is safe
8 – Ellsworth is vulnerable
9 – Hill should lose
I guess in a big R year, I could see the Republicans pick up the Senate seat and up to 3 House seats (with 2 more likely).
I actually think our best candidate is against Donnelly right now
I would love to see poll on Bayh vs Mitch.
HIll should lose although I am not impressed with candidates so far and don’t want another run for Mike Sodrel.
Ellsworth is strong candidate for Dems I’d love to knock him off
Who would be the heir apparent in the 6th District if Mike Pence were to run?
I wouldn’t dismiss Baron Hill as already beaten. There is probably no Democrat in the entire state that campaigns as fiercely (for lack of a better word) as he does and neither of the two current candidates are going to get it done. Sodrel probably has the best chance (a relative comparison and largely because his dilatoriness has kept several potential top-line candidates from entering the race).
It’s probably going to be easier for Jackie Walorski to beat Joe Donnelly than for Baron Hill to be beaten by the current field.
There’s a lot to indicate that there should be serious problems for Evan Bayh. Polling on ObamaCare, his recent votes, and the sharply declining fortunes of Democrats in similar positions in other red states all point to him having a much weakened position.
Hopefully, Pence will make his decision soon out of respect for his fellow Republicans such as State Senator Marlin Stutzman who has worked tirelessly the past few months for the opportunity to run against Bayh.
