Cato Institute education policy analyst, Adam Schaeffer, does an excellent job exposing how government schools are hiding their bloated budgets from tax payers.

Folks, it will never be enough. It is time to stop throwing money at a failed system. The cost is much more than the weak return on our investment. The greatest costs are the hearts and minds of American children and the nation.

We must insist tax-funded public education be returned to the only proven-successful model, the free market.

  1. Thanks for the link Kristee. It inspired me and I wandered over to my school district (ok, my school district if I let my kids go there), Carmel-Clay Schools. Fortunately their budget numbers are relatively easy to find:

    http://www1.ccs.k12.in.us/district/business-affairs/budget

It reports that the 2010 budget (including all funds) is about $138.7 million.

The bigger challenge was finding the number of students. I found one estimate of 14,517 students and another at 14,680 students.

    http://www.education.com/schoolfinder/us/indiana/district/carmel-clay-schools-school-district/

The math works out to somewhere between $9,449 and $9,555 per student. Not as bad as some districts.

    As a point of comparison:
Heritage Christian School – $9,130 tuition/yr (High School)
    Indianapolis Christian School – $4,464/yr
    Cardinal Ritter – $6,600 to $9,375 / yr
International School of Indiana – $14,250 (High School)
The Independence Academy (Autism School) – $11,000
