Health Care and America’s Future: The Right Way Forward:
By Rep. Tom Price MD
Submitted exclusively to Hoosier Access
Now that ObamaCare has become law, many on the Left seem to think the debate over health care is over. They could not be more wrong.
With the federal government calling the shots, the cost of care will climb as quality, responsiveness, innovation, and access all suffer. ObamaCare will saddle our job creators with higher tax burdens and perverse incentives to drop their employees into the government-run system. America is facing a future of rationed care and confiscatory tax hikes.
The need for reforms that put patients in charge and do not threaten to bankrupt our nation is now greater than ever. Here are four things conservatives must do to win the fight for America’s future:
1) Highlight the Real World Consequences – ObamaCare will decrease Americans’ access to care and place huge financial burdens on employers. Already, companies like AT&T, Caterpillar, 3M, Verizon, Valero Energy, John Deere, and others are predicting they will be hit with higher taxes and could very likely change or drop some of the health insurance options they currently offer.
2) Repeal and Replace – Spreading the word about this law’s disastrous consequences will help to build and sustain the push for a full repeal of ObamaCare. This leviathan must be repealed so we can start over with common sense, patient-centered solutions like H.R. 3400, the Empowering Patients First Act.
3) Support Constitutional Challenges – Congress has no constitutional authority to compel every single American to buy anything – whether it’s health insurance or tickets to the Indy 500. While working for repeal, conservatives should also support the efforts of governors, state legislatures and attorneys general who seek to block or overturn this government takeover.
4) Restore the Consent of the Governed – No governing majority can last in our Republic if it lacks the consent of the governed. While Democrats have flagrantly ignored the will of the American people, conservatives running for office must be committed to restoring your voice to its rightful place in our system of government.
The Democrats’ health care takeover is unconstitutional, bad for patients, and bad for the economy. Let’s fight to repeal and replace it with common sense solutions that empower patients first.
