Big Ten Network needs compromise to survive

The Big Ten athletic conference recently announced that it would - in a partnership with Fox Broadcasting Company — launch a new Big Ten Network (BTN). At $1.10 per customer each month, the BTN would be the second most costly channel on cable, more expensive for consumers than Discovery, TNT and Comedy Central.

Exacerbating matters, BTN disclosed that the Big Ten has contracted away the marquee football and basketball games to ABC, CBS and ESPN. Bracing for the landslide of criticism for this unpopular maneuver among football and basketball fans, the BTN has undertaken a multimillion-dollar lobbying campaign designed to couple its image with the lofty and storied history of Big Ten athletics. “This is Big Ten Country,” intones one ad, showing students loyally camped out under a canopy of school flags and mascots.
