Reminding the Government

By: Brian Sikma

We’re all used to the government reminding us of things. The speeding ticket reminds us that we shouldn’t go so fast (of course, you can legally bribe the government by entering Indiana’s “Infraction Deferral Program” and making a bet that you won’t get another ticket in the next 12 months), the tax bill reminds us that we must pay taxes, for business-owners the paperwork never stops as the government sends you notices of the need to file this with this agency and that with that agency. In the midst of all of this a question can-or at least should-be asked. Who reminds the government?

What, you say, do we need to remind the government of? Well, we need to remind our elected and appointed officials that they to have some regulations to follow. This past Saturday most folks probably thought about one thing: In eleven days it will be Christmas and I’m not done buying gifts, wrapping gifts, baking etc. However, one group remembered that that December 15th is Bill of Rights day. Yes, on December 15th, 1791 the Bill of Rights become the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of the United States.

Ever the advocate of limited government, Andy Horning had scheduled a press conference at the Indiana State House to remind the public and the government that there is a check on government power. Unfortunately, although there is a check on government power there is no law that puts a check on the weather and Mr. Horning and Co. were unable to make the event. However, Andy was able to post his letter to Governor Daniels online and post a few other observations here.

Now, after making that plug for Andy let me be quick to say that I don’t endorse every policy position that libertarians hold to nor do I support Ron Paul for president. That aside, I do believe in limited government that lets the people control their lives and only intervenes when the rights of others are interfered with when private entities refuse to control themselves.

  1. You don’t support Ron Paul? What?

  2. So I give you a nice plug and all you do is gripe that I don’t support “Dr. No”? :-)

Ron Paul does not have the leadership qualities, policy ideas, or foreign policy understanding that is required of a U.S. President in th 21st century.

I’m impressed with Gov. Mike Huckabee. He’s not perfect, but you have to take his Arkansas record and look at it with an understanding that he was dealing with a 90% Democrat legislature.

  3. Andy’s letter is on our blog too, but I didn’t know the PDF was hosted! The letter, I think, is brilliant.

And Andy…I predict Ron Paul is going to take the Republican nomination. No other candidate has grassroots supporters even close to rivaling R Paul’s.

Spangle likes Huckabee too. Where does Huckabee stand on issues that are important to gays?

  4. Here’s my answer to Ron Paul getting the nomination - Howard Dean. He had the grassroots and financial support any candidate could dream of in 2004 and had groups like MoveOn.org doing nefarious work on his behalf throughout the country during the early primaries. It still didn’t pan out for him.

I can also guarantee you, the national party won’t let Ron Paul take the nomination.

While, I like Ron Paul on fiscal matters, he’s a foreign policy idiot. As I wrote on my personal blog, you can’t run on “US out of Everywhere” and expect to win the Republican nomination. And where I like Mike Huckabee on some social issues, he’s a fiscal idiot with some other really serious issues coming out against him (the fact he pardoned more people in the time he was Gov. than the 6 states that surround Arkansas combined…and that one of those pardons eventually raped and murdered a girl…yeah, that’s his Willie Horton…it’s Mike Dukakis all over again except it’s the Republicans).

My ideal candidate, and the person I will support is Fred Thompson. I like where he stands fiscally, domestically and internationally. The only strike I find against him was his vote for McCain-Feingold (bad Fred, bad!). He has since said he would work to repeal some of the more horrific atrocities to free speech that McCain-Feingold has wrought if elected president.

Does Fred have a chance? More than Dr. No and Glass Jaw Mike do at this point….that is, if it were up to the party.

As for HA endorsing a presidential candidate, that’s not likely to happen as Brian and I are the only ones to verbally commit to a candidate while the others are probably like most of America. Still trying to figure it out.
