My Pick: Rob Krieg for Attorney General

With the surprising news of Attorney General Steve Carter’s Easter announcement that he will not seek another term, the rumor mill is already beginning as to who might take his place come November on the Republican ticket. Several candidates have already been mentioned on blogs today including Deputy Attorney General and Carter’s own pick Greg Zoeller, Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill, Locke Reynolds attorney Tom Wheeler, and even Secretary of State Todd Rokita.

One name that should be added to the list is Gibson County Prosecutor Rob Krieg. Krieg has been elected twice in a democrat county and is as well known in the 8th Congressional District as any Republican due to his long-time service as a top aide to Congressman John Hostettler. Krieg has made a name for himself as a common sense conservative who isn’t afraid to enforce sexually oriented business laws and for supporting pro-family and fiscal conservative causes. Krieg would be a formidable candidate at the Republican state convention where Republican delegates from southern Indiana could make a substantial difference for him.

Though others in this list would make fine Attorneys General, Krieg would have this northeast Indiana Republican Chairman’s support if he chooses to seek the position.

  1. Who is Tom Wheeler? He’s the only one you metioned that I’ve never heard of.

  2. Anyone who is Steve Carter’s pick should immediately not be considered. The AG’s office is the worst run office in all of state government.

  3. Tom Wheeler, more than just being an attorney at Locke Reynolds, is also the Chairman of the Elections Commission. He’s also the one who shot down the senseless challenge against John McCain and the signature petitions.

  4. Rob Krieg would be phenomenal. The GOP needs a southern Indiana person on the ticket.

  5. The problem is that Tony Bennett is already basically southern Indiana’s candidate for this go around.

I view it as unlikely that there will be two southern Indiana candidates, two 9th District candidates, or two candidates from Clark County (Greg Zoeller is from Clark County originally).
