So Much to Think About at 3am
The Burton campaign will start running this radio ad fairly soon, but it’s even up on You Tube with a little extra flair.

I heard this on WIBC a little while ago. I thought it was a bit much. I don’t have a problem with pointing out his role in budget and tax increases, but the generalizations in this ad seem a bit over the top.

Just wait till you hear McGoff’s ad on immigration which will start airing next week.

Even if McGoff’s ad may also be out of bounds, you are tactically better off being the second guy to go negative as you are then not perceived as the guy that started it.

i say let the demmies go negative–it’s already to that level anyway; but the republicans need to be strong this election and can’t afford a lot of infighting…

Josh, you have peaked my curiosity on immigration. McGoff was on Garrison earlier this week and HIS answers on immigration were not that great.
McGoff is not for deportation or for forcing illegals to return home for valid re-entry. At the same time he says he is not for amnesty, but I guess I don’t understand the difference between what he would like to see and amnesty. His position is also that we need the illegals because we are at “full employment”, even though he uses 4 point something percent as full employment. Of course, we are at 5.1 percent unemployment, which means his argument doesn’t hold water….
I’ll be interested to see where he goes with that.

McGoff was on Abdul a few months ago basically saying he was for legislation that amounted to amnesty. In fact, we covered that in the Burton interview back in February on Hoosier Access Radio which was reposted in the post above.

i would like to know what percentage of the unemployed in this state are illegal (i know, hard to pinpoint) vs. how many are here legally–i’m sure you could fill the gap…

Personally, I love the Burton ad. It’s just so darn funny. And it makes the right point too- the biggest winner in a Dan Burton loss isn’t John McGoff- its the Dems.
Any wonder why Taking Down Words has been positively gleeful about the McGoff campaign?

I don’t believe that illegals would be reflected in the unemployment rate since those numbers are based on unemployment claims, etc.

The Burton ad says that McGoff would push for higher taxes on the “working class” and spend with reckless abandon. While McGoff’s record is suspect, this charge is too far for me–I find it somewhat unfounded. It is certainly completely opposite of what he claims he wants.
This ad stops just short of being a personal attack, which is the right side to be on. I guess I would prefer for him to stay just a bit farther away from the line.

McGoff’s claims and his record couldn’t be more different. In the end, I think that’s what keeps me supporting Burton. McGoff and his flackies can run around trying to make issue of whether or not Burton is driving a Cadillac or a Cavalier, but at least I know with Dan Burton I’ll get a solid vote score. All I know about McGoff is that he CLAIMS he’s a conservative. Even Hillary Clinton claims to be a conservative these days, so McGoff insisting he’s a Burton man is meaningless unless he can prove it. And he can’t.
The only record we have on this guy is that he increased his budget by at least 76% (even McGoff doesn’t dispute that) and that he was once a member of a gun control group. Either one of those would give me a reason to vote against him.

I tend to agree with you regarding questioning the validity of McGoff’s record versus his rhetoric. But his record is a bit thin to be making bold statements like he would work with Clinton to raise taxes. The mailer I got from the Burton campaign yesterday was quoting from 1993 (15 years ago!)!
The tone of this campaign is not what it should be–which is largely laid at the feet of McGoff. But Rep. Burton has needlessly taken up McGoff’s tone. I think he would be better served by staying above the fray.
