Costas: Strong Arming “Needs to stop”

(Originally written by Brian Jessen of Indy’s Conservative Hardball)

Alright, I have had enough.

Josh Gillespie from Hoosier Access at one time said that I “remind (him) of Chris Matthews, except..well..conservative”. So I must stay true…

All this AG race stuff is becoming ridiculous. So I made a phone call.

Yes, I called Jon Costas.

Being from `da Region, I will have to say that I have been a part of the Lake County/Porter County on going, alleged feud. And the last name of Costas has never been one I have been thrilled with.

So calling Jon Costas was a step for me…

Our 25 minute phone call was polite and to the point.

After Costas impressed me by “doing his homework” on who I am and things I have done, I brought the conversation straight to the point.

When I confronted Jon Costas about Tom John’s firing of Dave Miller (a Marion County GOP township chairman that who quoted in the Howey Report as complaining about John’s strong-arming of delegates and demand for a pro-Costas loyalty oath for appointed delegates), Costas made comment that he had heard some rumblings of what was going on in Central Indiana.

I found it difficult to believe, that a man who knew more about me than most, would not have known/heard about Tom John firing Dave Miller.

(Read more after the leap)

I asked Costas if he had trouble with the fact that John was confronting people, who wanted to be appointed to delegate, to sign a document that they would support Costas.

Costas said that he didn’t know “if it was problematic” for a County Chair to ask who the potential delegate would be supporting before appointing them to be a delegate. In essence, Costas is okay with that action.

However, if strong arming tactics were going on, “that needs to stop” Costas said firmly. I asked if he had heard about strong arming. Costas said he had indeed been made aware of it and then committed to me that he would look into it quickly.

I informed Costas that these actions had been confirmed by some in the blogsphere and that these actions (while they are not Jon’s directly) are a direct reflection upon Jon.

But Costas said pledges didn’t bother him either.

“After all, it is a secret ballot isn’t it?”, Jon asked me.

Well yes it is Jon. But when it has been reported that delegates who vote against the grain will be “punished” or dealt with, it gives the impression that people like Tom John and/or the Mitch Daniel Camp is trying to take away the rights of delegates to vote for whom they chose.

Costas committed to keeping in touch as to what he finds out is going on. He also made a comment that he found it exciting that blogs have become so involved in this race. Costas does of course have blogs loyal to him as well.

I changed the subject and then asked him about why he felt he was a better choice for AG.

Electability was the number one reason that rolled off his tongue.

While he said that Greg Zoeller was a friend of his, Costas was more concerned about if “Greg could connect with voters or not”. It is no secret that this is not Zoeller’s first run at the AG’s office.

Costas talked about his prior business experience and distinguished career as an lawyer, working on high profile cases for some of the world’s largest corporations. Costas referenced that Zoeller had basically been involved in government most of his career.

Is it true? Well, it depends on how you look at it.

According to Zoeller’s website:

Mr. Zoeller has also served as the president and director of the World Trade Center of Indiana, a post that he assumed in 1999 when he initiated the development of a strategic plan at the Hudson Institute. He negotiated a contractual relationships with the Indiana Manufacturer’s Association and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce to provide benefits to their respective membership. As the president of the World Trade Center, Mr. Zoeller managed the business services provided through the World Trade Center Association in New York City and was the chief contact with 316 member World Trade Centers in nearly 100 countries worldwide.

Bottom line: they both bring experience.

I also asked about leaving office early and not following thru on his commitment to Valpo’s residence.

Jon said he didn’t plan on running for AG. Carter’s exit was a surprise to all. This event though offered a “rare and unusual opportunity” for Northwest Indiana. We all know Northwest Indiana is the forgotten county, don’t we? I mean, Indiana has 91 counties… doesn’t it?

Have people from Valpo expressed any feelings on this issue to Costas? We all know that Jon will say that many people support his venture here… but Costas talked about how people have expressed that they would be more upset if Costas allowed this opportunity for NWI to be represented in the Daniels’ administration to pass by.

I told Jon upfront, that I have always spoken against elected officials using one office to run for another and referrenced my postings about Andre Carson.

“Well, I would have preferred this opportunity to have come two years down the road,” Costas said. He added that too, Valpo is in a good position to be able to pass the reigns on to another. Makes me wonder what people in Valpo really have to say.

But there was a point that Jon Costas and I agreed upon. Yes, there was one.

“I really feel it’s time for a new set of eyes to become the Attorney General,” Costas said. Zoeller has worked in the AG’s office since 2001 (confirmed by Zoeller’s website).

And while Steve Carter and Greg Zoeller have done an “exceptional job” in the AG’s office, Costas also felt that he brought a “breathe of experience” to the AG’s office that was new and different from what Zoeller could do.

I have to say I agree. But also, Zoeller has not been the AG for the last eight years. So it can be said that Zoeller brings new ideas as well.

It’s all political spin. I could take this entire conversation and spin it where Zoeller would be a better choice for AG. But I won’t do that.

Honestly, all this crap needs to stop.

This is the Republican Party. We are not known for these antics. The more you read these blogs, the more it looks like Mitch Daniels is beginning to resemble Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. And that’s not the Mitch I know and have campaigned for.

In this last week before Convention, I think it is time for the delegates to decide on who is the best choice for AG. Let Zoeller and Costas reach out and connect with the delegates. And all these people involved in these interesting campaign technics need to realize what their actions are doing to the candidate they support.

  1. I find it hard to believe that he is oblivious or ignorant of what his campaign and others are doing in his name, so I’ll believe it when I see it in writing and in action.

Perhaps Mr. Costas would be willing to put out a statement releasing delegates from any loyalty oath or written pledge that they may have been required or compelled to make.

And hopefully he’d call for Tom John, in writing, to reinstate Dave Miller and to not punish anyone regardless of how they voted at the convention.

And maybe he’d make a similar request, in writing, of the Governor, since the Daniels people have likewise been ominously threatening county chairs, officials, and delegates.

And hopefully (and I’m sure he’d love to do this) he would make a written pledge agreeing to 1) continue the Pastrick case (where his firm has done legal work on other defendants) and 2) not outsource any more work to large Indy law firms than is already being done by the Carter AG office.

  2. Since “facts” comment was patently false and defamatory, it was deleted.

Play by the rules “facts” and actually read a post completely before commenting. If you decide to keep it up, proper actions will be taken.

  3. Josh,

I only quoted your comment about the Republican Governor, Mitch Daniels and asked two questions about your future in politics.

When people read your postings they will know how you feel about the Governor.

  4. Facts, it wasn’t my quote. Perhaps you missed the opening line of this post:

“(Originally written by Brian Jessen of Indy’s Conservative Hardball)”.

This was a cross posting. Brian asked if I would cross post it and I did. If you actually read through all 500+ posts of mine on this site, you’ll find that I’m quite supportive of Governor Daniels and have defended him against liberal bloggers on the Abdul in the Morning show.

So you would have your “facts” wrong. I realize you have a fun time picking on me for some reason, but please do “fact checking” next time before you leave a comment, “facts”.

  5. Josh,

When your name is a the top of the posting, it’s easy to believe that you share Brian’s feelings about the Governor when it comes to the battle over the GOP candidate for AG.

  6. Then let me set the record straight here Facts. I do not share Brian’s statements regarding Governor Daniels.

Brian is a friend and I posted his blog post b/c he actually contacted Jon Costas to get his response regarding alleged heavy handed tactics in Marion County.

I hope this sets the record straight for you.

    Thanks for jumping in Josh…
Since I wrote the post, allow me to make a comment.

Read what I said about Governor Daniels.
“The more you read these blogs, the more it looks like Mitch Daniels is beginning to resemble Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. And that’s not the Mitch I know and have campaigned for.”

If Mitch is somehow mixed up in all this, I will be highly upset. I have not had the opportunity to personally ask the Governor. So until that chance happens (and yes, I put in a phone call), I will remain open minded that all of this coming from the Mitch Camp is rumor.

The only thing I have confirmed was Tom John’s actions. Reread the post; it does not put down Mitch, rather the actions of a few who are allegedly acting in his name.

  8. facts and Josh, thanks for the reminder, this is about holding the Governor’s job and the other statewide offices as well. This is about winning in November, not destroying each other this week.

This may all be fun, especially for those few of us who think a party convention will be more fun with a contested race, but let’s be careful we don’t hurt the changes of Daniels and our statewide races.

Scott seems like he’s leaning toward this guy running independant against Daniels, but as far as I can tell the rest of us are all onboard with Mitch.

  9. Far from it, actually.

But the Governor and his campaign need to recognize the danger that folks like Senator Waterman represent to his campaign. Not merely in terms of Waterman as a potential candidate, but in terms of people like Waterman either jumping ship in November to someone else or not voting at all.

The Governor and his campaign have behaved quite arrogantly in their supremely secure knowledge that conservatives and Republicans have nowhere to go but to the big green machine. This is just not the case.

Lots of conservatives will either bolt or (more likely) stay home in November if their disagreements with Daniels continue and are not addressed (let alone if things like the AG race make it worse).

Recognizing that this problem exists is the first step to fixing it.

  10. So “strong arm tactics” are not good but it’s okay if loyalty oaths are demanded before delegates are appointed. What’s Costas’ definition of a “strong arm tactic”? Perhaps it’s as narrow as his view of eminent domain should be…

  11. I have already said I will not vote republican in the fall, the first time in 12 years I will not vote, because of how rude and uncivil the party has been in trying to force the candidacy. I have decided after reading many of the posts after a couple days off that I have changed my mind and will vote for Governor Daniels regardless because he is good for business. I will vote for Greg Zoeller also but will not vote for Costas. The way Marion County party and the Costas campaign has forced themselves on people is repulsive. Someone was fired for not following in line? This is not a candidate I will support. Free country, I vote how I want, lucky I don’t have to be forced by a fool like Tom John. What an imbecile. Costas touts his religious beliefs, apparently that includes looking the other way when bad things happen. For those of you who think a vote for Zoeller means no support for the Governor, you are wrong. People are talking about this, maybe if Costas were to come out and say “Tom John is an idiot and does not speak for the Governor or me” this would help our party move forward. Unless Costas is OK with how this has been handled.

  12. I agree with asking Tom Johns to apologize to David Miller, a man who has dedicated years of service to the Republican party. Miller attended no meetings last week, as he was in Costa Rica, and the previous week he attended only one meeting - the Perry Township Republican club. Miller did not lead that meeting, nor did he make any comments while there. If firing someone by voice mail for something they absolutely did not do is something this party does to loyal supporters, Johns needs to reinstate Miller immediately, and Costas should demand John’s resignation - and not by voice mail!

  13. This was emailed to me by someone who must keep their identity off the blogs. Normally we don’t accept anonymous comments but this one we’re going to accept:

“If the sitting Governor does not approve of such behavior by Tom John he should speak up promptly, otherwise, it would appear that Tom John is following orders from the Governor and is lynching Daniels supports, just like he is are lynching Ballard supporters who did not follow orders to not support Ballard during the campaign.

If the Governor wants to win the office this November, he should denounce Tom John and such tactics promptly because the stench is leaking over into the Governors office, a pity. You can’t strong arm Republicans right now, especially in todays climate; it just won’t work and will backfire.”
