Interesting Palin-Obama Comparison

Barack Obama, March 29, 2008:

…look, I’ve got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby. I don’t want them punished with an STD at the age of 16…

Because, of course, a new life is immediately comparable to a sexually-transmitted disease.

Sarah Palin, September 1, 2008:

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

I hope the media will ask Senator Obama a simple question:

Is Bristol Palin being punished with a baby?

Certain folks in the seats on the left are, unsurprisingly, both “appalled” and snickering at the whole situation. Their reactions are predictably disgusting.

“Sarah Palin supports abstinence education! Her daughter didn’t listen and got knocked up! Sarah Palin’s teenage daughter doesn’t listen to her parents! And they’re going to keep the baby and not flush it! OMG!”

I’m not sure how Sarah Palin supporting abstinence education and her daughter, as children often do, not listening to her parents translates into some sort of political windfall (or liability, for that matter) for anybody.

Part of being a good parent means supporting your children when life throws them, and you, a curveball. What’s amazing here is the very public support the Palins have for their daughter, the fact that the two soon-to-be parents are going to be getting married to give the child a family, and that they’re keeping the baby and don’t see it as being a “punishment.”

Being pro-life doesn’t mean being perfect. It does mean that you respect and cherish that new life when it comes, even if it comes at inconvenient times or to young parents.

As always, the contrasts are stark.
