Good Morning, Hoosier Access readers.
It’s no secret Matt Tully is in the tank for the Left. He’s not quite as obvious about as say, She Who Is Never Mentioned By Name Here By Me, but it’s pretty obvious. Of course with the exception of Gary Varvel the Rag is with little uncertainty a mouthpiece for the Liberal Left.
So what deserves a mention here on the favorite blog of Indiana Conservatives? This column blasting Mayor Greg Ballard.
“Mayor Greg Ballard is tired of putting his foot in his mouth” – He’s not. He’s tired of you twisting the words.
“Ballard’s administration has not been the most communicative in history.” – And you’re upset over it? Oh right he’s not playing mother-may-I and floating trial balloons in the media like the last clown that occupied the 25th Floor.
“But he’s a big boy, and if he doesn’t want to talk anymore, that’s his decision.” – Granted I don’t speak for The Colonel, but more than likely it’s not that he doesn’t want to talk. He just don’t want to talk to a bunch of moonbats at the Indianapolis Star that twist his words and take things out of context to suit an agenda. Then again this was the same Indianapolis Star that issued endorsements without talking to all of the candidates.
We just had a half hour podcast with Mayor Ballard last weekend – it’s available right here on Hoosier Access Radio. And Josh and myself will tell you we were not given a list of topics to discuss, nor did we edit any of the audio. Considering during the 2008 Marion County Slating which was also covered by Hoosier Access Radio, the Mayor stopped by the table to say hello. Josh invited the Mayor to sit down and we ended up doing an impromptu 20-30 minute interview with the Mayor. Wouldn’t that just blow chunks if you were Matt Tully and the Ryerson Rag? A bunch of bloggers having access to the Mayor and the Rag doesn’t? HA!
Let’s face it – the last person anyone – especially the Mayor of the nation’s 13th largest city – wants to talk to on a long airline flight is a political columnist who doesn’t really like his policies or stances on the issues in the first place. So what does Matt Tully do? Writes an excoriating column against the Mayor.
You’ve heard the saying – “Never pick an argument with someone who buys ink by the barrel or owns the broadcast tower”. Well we’re picking that argument with the ink folks. Frankly the age of the newspaper is fading. The blatent bias of newspapers – namely the Gannett chain – is clouding its journalistic objectivity. But what do we know we’re just a bunch of stinking bloggers. Never mind how several blogs including one now defunct blog helped spread the word the MSM never reported upon, exposing the Democrats for what they were and helping elect the Mayor into office.
If you subscribe to the Indianapolis Star, cancel your subscription. If you buy it at the corner Stop-and-Rob, save your money. No use feeding the Gannett propaganda machine any longer.
well put Mike…well put!
I quit reading Matt Tully a couple of months ago. This just proves I was right to stop wasting my time.
*sigh–i miss the days of Indy Undercover…
Could not agree with you more Mike.
The Cage-Liner lost any pretense of objectivity years ago. The worst thing that ever happened to one of the once-great newspapers in the Midwest was Gannett. I was hoping the new guy could turn it around and instead of issuing pink slips to the hard working folks in the back office, given Dennis “Thanks for Ruining the Star” Ryerson and Matt “I’m so full of myself that I can’t understand why I don’t fit through the door” Tully their walking papers.
If it weren’t for the coupons and crossword in the Sunday paper, and the exceptional absorbency of the newsprint for the puppy’s piddle place, I wouldn’t even bother getting up on Sunday mornings. Just sayin’ that the Sunday paper has enough pages to last the puppy all week.
Tully is tom johns friend and wrote great articles about him when he was becoming county chair. why would he do that if he was supporting the democrats? Oh no, I just answered my own question. When does he get voted out?
Never thought I’d see Hoosier Access criticizing the Indy Star for being slanted. I mean honestly, would you be happy if it was slanted completely to the right? It would still be slanted, but you wouldn’t mind. Unless blogs like this one quit being so sensationalistic and subjective they’ll never unseat newspapers.
Is that why the Star is losing readership?
http://www.ibj.com/html/detail_page.asp?content=13692
The article notes how readership for the Sunday paper is down about 15% over the last 10 years. And this is in a growing community!
Mikeyc252, you might note the purpose of this blog: “Hoosier Access is a community driven blog that is committed to the politically conservative ideals of limited government, economic policies that enable capital growth in our communities while encouraging fiscal restraint in the government sector, and the preservation of traditional moral values such as the sanctity of life and the centrality of traditional marriage.” So are we “slanted”? Yes. Stated right there in the purpose statement. It is a blog, not a generic news outlet.
But looking at what is going on with the major newspaper source of news cannot ignore their undeclared, but clearly evident bias.
Here’s the thing I think we all forget here. Matt Tully is paid to give his opinion. He’s an opinion columnist, so he’s paid to give his slant.
I guess the question really should be, should a newspaper that’s supposed to be unbiased pay someone to give their opinion, which is clearly biased, of a person or a situation?
I wouldn’t call Tully a liberal, just to the left. Clearly he really loved John McGoff…or was it that he hated Dan Burton and he’d vote for and root for anybody but the Congressman.
Just something to keep in mind.
Fair enough, Josh. I long, though for the time when newspapers announced their leanings with names like the “Indianapolis Democrat” or the “Muncie Republican”.
Am I the only one that thinks Ballard developing a bunker mentality is bad? I know I’m on a partisan Republican blog, but I know that enough of you are intellectually honest that you must think for yourself on occasion, right?
Really, stating that Ballard came on a podcast distributed on a partisan blog that was listened to by the same number of people who read Tully’s column in an average span of about five seconds is not proof of his openness. That’s like saying Andre Carson being interviewed by Thomas Cook is proof of how accommodating Andre can be.
Frankly, it’s a bit disturbing that a guy elected by “the folks”, as O’Reilly would say, is doing his best to insulate himself from us.
And Joe Fri.., er Mike; lamenting the demise of a site that trafficked in nothing more than trash gossip and innuendo does nothing less than demean you and your cause, not to mention the site you are now a director of. Serious people would never stoop to supporting a site that lowered itself to the level that particular blog did, hence why it’s gone.
Hey Jacob – I WAS NOT Joe Friday. Nor do I know who was.
I don’t think Ballard is developing a bunker mentality. Even if he is ignoring the Indy Star does not qualify. The question is whether or not Ballard is 1) available to the citizenry (I think the answer is “yes”) and 2) if they do their job, can the press do their job? (I think the answer is “yes”)
I would argue that the only way that Tully (or the newspaper in general) would say that he was being “open” is if they came down to the Star daily with hat in hand to submit to their beatings.
Mike, nice to know your sense of humor remains intact.
jacob, do you really think mike was “the man behind the curtain”?
I would agree, that should the Mayor be developing a banker mentality, it is a bad idea. It would be nice if there were more news reporting options in Indy besides the Star and the IBJ, but there isn’t. So by avoiding the Star, you’re essentially cutting yourself off from the print media as the IBJ doesn’t have the subscription numbers that the Star does.
That said, I don’t know if he’s going bunker on us, but Tully’s piece sure would give that impression.
i really don’t think he would do that–at least not those who are on friendly terms with him. I’ve known him for a little over a year now and nothing i know about him would suggest that he would do that to his closest supporters…
My fault, I was using the general “us”. I wasn’t referring to Hoosier Access “us”. The Mayor obviously hasn’t shut us out. But we’re a known and admitted partisan entity.
I personally think that the more open an elected official is with the media (especially all kinds of media new and traditional) the better that official will be trusted and treated. That’s personal opinion, but it’s based on a lot of what I’ve seen and experienced.
Josh is right, noone really knows if the bunker mentality has won this admin over. However people are talking about it as it is clear it may have or is in the process of being the mentality. The team around the mayor is lackluster and the accomplishments to date are minimal. Worse is that the structure or things “in the pipeline” is not well built for next couple years to improve the city. The dems had people in spots with angles to get things done, even if we did not agree, they got them done. We do not have the type of saavy people to get things done. It is now clear second tier Gov Daniels admin guys who left were second tier for a reason. Noone wants to talk about it but we are all thinking the same thing, there are holes and unless fixed this is going to start sinking.
So this is a conservative blog. If so clearly stated, how can you speak with any authority when it comes to bias?
have been trying to google Tully. Can,t find out his bona fides as commentator on local politics. As one who knows how the system works I have serious reservtions about this person being featured as A REPORTER. What is his personal profile? married? any kids? Any ties to Indy? We do not need another guy who snipes and uses the STAR as his pulpit, without any stake in what happens here. There are enough talking heads on TV
