If elected, Obama will raise taxes.

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Via CBS News:

“We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people,” Biden said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: “It’s time to be patriotic … time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

Be patriotic - give more money to us!

Is Joe Biden TRYING to lose the election?

More importantly, does Baron Hill agree that raising taxes is patriotic?

When you can’t beat Mitch on the ballot, beat him in the courts

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

It appears that as Indiana Democrats give up on Jill Long Thompson they are turning to the courts to wage their war against Mitch Daniels.

A while back (yeah, we are a little behind on this one) Shaw Friedman, a former chief counsel to the state Democrats, former Edwards campaign chair, and former Democrat county chairman announced he was suing the state over FSSA modernization.

Is this an attempt for Democrats to impede Mitch Daniels agenda via the courts after failing to do so electorally or legislatively? We think so. And there’s a history of it.

A case study in the need for local government reform

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

On September 9, the Herald-Times reported:

Last year, (Brown County) commissioners Stephanie Yager and Blake Wolpert supported and voted to establish a fire district and a board to oversee the fire departments. The district has taxing power and received preliminary approval Aug. 28 from the state to levy taxes of up to $166,000 for 2009 and up to $420,000 for 2010 to fund the operation.

(Link requires paid subscription.)

The Brown County Council considered the $166,000 budget request for the district, but refused to authorize any money for it. The fire district was very unpopular and a petition against it had hundreds of signatures. Whether the fire district is good policy or not, the Brown County Council certainly followed the will of their constituents.

Pence Plays Politics with Storm, Looks Silly

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Linda Pence had a press conference demanding that Attorney General Steve Carter investigate allegations of gasoline price gouging in the wake of the remnants of Hurricane Ike battering much of Indiana.

Steve Carter’s response is priceless.

From the Courier-Journal, she asks:

“It is the job of the attorney general not to turn a blind eye to big oil,” Pence said. “In this situation, the attorney general should actively investigate the pricing practices in Indiana and why our consumers are treated differently.”

Steve Carter answers:

Carter said there are good reasons for some of Indiana’s increases. The wholesale price that Hoosier stations were paying for gas recently spiked higher than their retail prices, although the wholesale price has dropped in the past two days. Also, many crude-oil operations in the Gulf, where Indiana gets much of its gas, remain shuttered and a major pipeline to the region is not pumping gas.

After laying out the market situation, which sort of makes Pence’s claims and demands look absurd, Carter suggests that all of those facts might still be wrong, and says that Linda Pence can provide any information she might have to aid with an investigation:
