Indy Native and Alaskan Senator, Ted Stevens Guilty on Corruption Charges

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Broad Ripple High School graduate and one the of the Senates primary benefactors of pork legislation, Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens, has been convicted of seven counts of corruptions charges.

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted of seven corruption charges Monday in a trial that threatened to end the 40-year career of Alaska’s political patriarch in disgrace. The verdict, coming barely a week before Election Day, increased Stevens’ difficulty in winning what already was a difficult race against Democratic challenger Mark Begich. Democrats hope to seize the once reliably Republican seat as part of their bid for a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Stevens, 84, was convicted of all the felony charges he faced of lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. Jurors began deliberating last week.

For Republicans, this couldn’t come at a worse time as they are holding on by a slim thread, as the above paragrahs mentioned, of preventing a filibuster proof Democrat controlled Senate. At the same time, Stevens has been one of major opponents to earmark reform in the Senate even after his pet project, affectionately nicknamed the “Bridge to Nowhere”, became the symbol of horrendous congressional pork barrel spending.

Honestly, I’m not sorry to see him go even if it means a Democrat gets his seat for six years.  And I’m not alone in thinking that either.

Rokita Links ACORN To Major Registration Violations

Monday, October 27th, 2008

*Special Note* - Secretary of State Todd Rokita will be a guest on Hoosier Access Radio this Saturday at 3:00pm.

The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Secretary of State Todd Rokita has linked the community organizing group ACORN to massive voting irregularities including possible State and Federal racketeering charges in conjunction with thousands of fraudulent voter registrations in Lake County.

UPDATE by Mike: The Hammond Times has an article of the Obama campaign denouncing Secretary Rokita’s actions .. Now back to the original article:

Secretary of State Todd Rokita said today that a preliminary investigation by his office has found evidence of “multiple criminal violations, including possible state and federal racketeering laws,” in conjunction with hundreds of fraudulent voter registration applications filed in Lake County.

The findings and a request for prosecution are detailed in a letter Rokita, Indiana’s top election official, sent last week to Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter, U.S. Attorney David Capp and Michael Welch, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis office.

The allegations of knowingly submitting fraudulent applications, a Class D felony, are aimed at the left-leaning activist group, Acorn, which conducted registration drives in several key presidential battleground states. Acorn is being investigated for similar issues in about a dozen other states.

Lake County election officials have alleged, and Acorn officials confirmed, that the organization submitted hundreds of potentially bad voter registration applications earlier this month.

5000 Early Votes In ONE PER Day!

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Just checked the George Mason University numbers for Marion County in light of the Rag report of “heavy” turnout at the two satellite voting centers on the Northside and Southside. According to the GMU reported numbers, 5000 people turned out in ONE DAY to vote early. Averaged out among all precincts we’re now at 30 votes per precinct being early in person votes.

UPDATE 10/27/2008 - With One Week before the early voting deadline and One Week and One Day remaining to Election Day, Marion County has exceeded by percentage of early votes compared to the early votes cast in the 2004 General Election. As of the 26th, Marion County has 27,078 early votes cast, or average among all 590 precincts equally that’s 46 votes per precinct.
