I don't think Weaver should be taken seriously, but I'd love to hear the guy speak and prove otherwise. He ought to do so well-before the primary though, so a good foundation and activist base arises early on like a freight train right over Bayh's lackluster career.

While it would be nice to be competitive in the 1st District and field viable candidates there, it's just not a competitive seat. It's probably at least as much a Democratic safe seat as the 5th is a safe GOP seat.

I think that Dumezich has a very good chance against Evan Bayh (the best of any of the possibilities, I think). He was at my Lincoln Day Dinner back in April and (after some prodding) got up and gave some impromptu remarks. He was very impressive, and the audience (rural and suburban conservative Republicans, mostly) took to him and liked him a lot more than I thought they would.

Man, did you just take a swim, because you're all wet.

Seriously though, the GOP needs to take some serious effort to erode the stronghold (this also goes for the strong supporters/activists associated with conservatism/the GOP - after all, they ask for enough action, it's time to be PART of it).

Are population centers like the first district statistically likely to go R? Maybe not. But that's precisely the way we should think if we want to keep shrinking our boundaries and become regional (though I reject that we truly are southern/rural if you consider all the data)
