This past week 5th Congressional District hopeful Luke Messer held a press conference with only (16) sixteen people and two children present and announced he had hundreds and hundreds of supporters. Now I looked down the list and it is full of insiders, former State Party employees, former Mitch for Governor Campaign staffers, a few state legislators and a number of others.
Let’s take a look at Luke Messer, he was once the Executive Director of the State of Indiana Republican Party, a former Legislator turned lobbyist and a former partner at the law firm Ice Miller. Most of his supporters are people who used to work for him and with him at Ice Miller and the Indiana State Republican Party. This is full of insiders and most of them don’t even live in the 5th Congressional District and want a voice in this race?
After Luke’s press release this past week Brose McVey went on the attack for this “insider” and buddy buddy system” and he asked the voters if they have “Had enough”? He states this from his recent press release:
“Now, I don’t have any trouble on the personal level with these guys or their backers. I know them, like them, respect their service. But, if you are like me, you’ve had enough of the insider baseball, the money politics and the buddy-buddy system!
I have to agree with him on this, I’m not saying that Luke Messer is a bad person, I believe in his family values and his willingness to serve his country, but when you leave office to become a lobbyist at a huge Indianapolis Law firm and want to come back into office and have your buddies back you….that concerns voters and I personally think they are tired of it.

Recently Brose McVey attended a town hall with Dr. John McGoff in Huntington and the organizer of the event stated that Luke Messer did not want to attend because he is running against Congressman Burton, not McVey or McGoff and both Candidates stated that they thought that Luke was running against them as well in the Primary, but they could have been mistaken, but I don’t think so. While at the town hall event, both McGoff and McVey called Messer the “Indy anointed one” and looking at the list, they have a point. McVey stated in his recent press release this as well:
“people across the district are tired of seeing the insiders push their buddies into office.”
The voters are tired of the same old political system of the insiders running the race and rightfully so!
Also, while Luke is sending out press releases and bragging about the insiders who are supporting him, State Rep Mike Murphy is coming out with Energy plans and working hard for the voters in his district. I live in the 5th and with me traveling in the 5th I have not seen a lot of Luke Messer, but see the other candidates. I have seen Luke’s campaign staffers going to events and town halls, but writing stuff down and moving on. But not speaking to the people of the 5th CD.
Let’s just say this race is going to get ugly before it gets better. Luke Messer once a former State Rep turned lobbyist and backed by insiders, Brose McVey who is the one pointing all of this out, Current State Rep. Mike Murphy is not bragging about supporters, but coming up with plans if he wins this seat, and Dr. John McGoff who is not very visible, but is at least out talking to the voters of the 5th and is attending town halls along with Brose.
Now I want to say and agree with Brose, I have nothing personal with Luke Messer or any of his supporters, I am friends with most of them and respect them. This is not an attack on Luke, but rather a message from the voters. People are sick and tired of the insiders pushing their buddies into office and backing the Candidate they think will “change” DC and the games people play in that town. Let’s look into the past and see how “change” worked for America in the last election. We have to quit voting for the insiders friends and get back to basics with our votes. The voters are tired of their voice not being heard….and personally I don’t blame them!
It makes one wonder here in Marion County how many Precinct Committeemen and Ward Chairpersons will be threatened with dismissal if they don’t publicly state their support for Luke Messer. And if Messer does not win their precinct, ward, or area will the heads begin to roll come Wednesday after the primary? We’ve already seen it with the SD30 caucus when the party’s favored candidate Ryan Vaughn was handily beaten by Scott Schneider. As a result some Ward Chairpersons were fired. We saw it in 2008 as a result of the State Convention when the party’s favored candidate Jon Costas was beaten by Attorney General Greg Zoeller, and some areas of Marion County were divided as a punishment for their lack of support for Costas.
This Congressional primary is total lunacy! You knew this was going to happen. Already almost $1 million has been raised and for what purpose? If we do not win control of the Indiana House and unseat Bauer next year, I will hold Messer, McVey, Murphy and McGoff responsible. They have clearly put themselves ahead of their Republican Party.
In an odd twist of fate I can see the Indy people blaming Dan Burton and the three other M’s for getting in the way of their golden boy Luke Messer.
Mark my words. This race will get very ugly before it is over. Jennifer Hollowell, Messer’s guru, is the queen of push polling and she will not hesitate to throw whatever mud she can to force people out of the race. It appears Messer’s only strategy is “I can raise money and get party hacks to back me, now get out of my way!”
Since you brought up McVey’s amateur-at-best-blog-post let me point out that while he was ranting about insiders, he forgot to mention Messer out-raised him by individual donations coming out of District 5. He should probably read the numbers so he knows what he is talking about next time.
I’m also unsure about what candidates were pushed in by their buddies “in this district”. If you are referring to Burton then I am not sure how something that happened 20+ years ago applies to today.
I honestly thought you were a good blogger until you copycatted the same talking point from 3 other websites. If personal interest was such an issue for these guys, they’d step down and nominate one candidate. While we may disagree on who we think that candidate should be—we can’t sit here and whine about Burton when all of these candidates are simply making his playing field easier.
Huh? What are you talking about 20 plus years ago and while I am at it. Let me give you a little education on “insiders” If you look at the list (which I will link here later) it is full of insiders….and I would like to mention I have nothing personally against these people I am friends with a lot of them.
Also, when I say the voters are tired of the “insiders” pushing their buddies into office, you must not pay any attention to what is going on in the political scene right now. The voters are ticked off and want to change how DC works (I argue it will be hard, but maybe, just maybe they (the politicians will listen) NY 23 bring back any memories?
And “seriouslydude” And as far as me being a good blogger, I posted their quotes and the rest I wrote myself. I have nothing personally against you or anyone else if you support someone else that is fine with me. I was just giving an opinion and the facts.
