Someone once said that variety is the spice of life. In many ways I would agree with that statement, which is why I like to read sites featuring sane and reasoned Democrats. That would include Chris Worden’s excellent “IPOPA” blog.
On Friday, Chris had a post calling out Republican State Rep. (and former Marion County GOP chair) Mike Murphy, for raising money for his pointless primary challenge to Congressman Dan Burton.
Republican former State Representative Luke Messer announced on Thursday his plans to run for Congress in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. The seat is currently held by U.S. Congressman Dan Burton who has announced he is seeking a 15th term. The district includes all of Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Grant, Tipton, Hamilton, and Hancock counties, as well as parts of Howard, Marion, Shelby, and Johnson.
“This is a very serious time in our nation’s history,” Messer said at a gathering with supporters in Shelbyville. “And, in tough times, Hoosiers step forward. We’re not the kind of folks to sit back and wait for others to solve our problems. That’s why we’re working with our friends and neighbors to build this campaign for Congress.”
In what has very quickly become a non-event, news came out today that City-County Councilman Ed Coleman has left the Republican party to become a member of the Libertarian Party.
Yawn…
Please allow me to say this up front: I really like Ed. Beyond the fact that his wife was a good friend of mine in high school, during the time I’ve known Ed he’s become someone I’ve admired. He got into this (politics) for the right reasons and Indianapolis can be proud of his service.
Up until today, that is. With his action he has effectively deprived Indianapolis of his leadership and has paved the way for his early retirement from politics. This has nothing to do with the Republican Party (or the City of Indianapolis) and everything to do with Ed and salving his wounds from some perceived mistreatment, either real or imagined.
Think about it: Ed has now been stripped of his committee seats. He has removed himself as a voice for any input on city affairs. If this was about policy or ideology, what stops him from voting a certain way while maintaining his party affiliation? Was he that naive that he didn’t know that sometimes in politics you don’t always get your way?

There’s a buzz around D.C. today that President Obama is seriously considering Senator Evan “Willow Tree” Bayh as a replacement for Senator Judd Gregg (who was a replacement for Gov. Bill Richardson, who was a replacement for Karl Marx, who sadly is deceased) as a nominee for Secretary of Commerce.
I think this is absolutely brilliant, and not just because “Willow Tree” supported Hillary during the primary, thus giving credence to this alleged “Team of Rivals” our Community Organizer-in-Chief is building (and not just because Bayh might have actually paid his taxes).
It’s brilliant for several reasons, but try and follow my logic (for graduates of Perry Meridian High School, I’ll go slowly):
I realize all too well that we live in a society today that falls for buzzwords and clever tag lines. Heck, in 16 years of “flacking”, I’m probably responsible for a few myself (just don’t ask me how successful they were). But even a jaded and well-worn political hack like myself was shocked that such an empty slogan as “Change We Can Believe In” had such a positive effect on the electorate this past November. I suppose I’m guilty of having way too much faith in voters then they have earned. In stark contrast, the Congressional race I just finished working on in Florida simply used the candidate’s last name with the word “Congress” underneath – and we won by 20%.
In regards to Chairman Obama (as I prefer to call him), how can a creation of the dirty and corrupt Chicago political machine portray himself as a reformer, especially without any actual work product reforming anything? I mean, piggybacking yourself onto Emil Jones’s reform bill in the Illinois State Senate does not a reformer make.
But, I do know a State Senator who actually cares about results and real reform, and he happens to be my good friend Mike Delph.

Note to bloggers: if you are looking for an easy way to generate some quick traffic, just put the words “Andre Carson” somewhere in your blog. I’m getting an average of ten hits per day from google or yahoo! searches on “Andre Carson”. Hmm…
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve long believed that Julia Carson’s grand plan was to have her grandson replace her, and take up her mantle as champion of Indianapolis (yes, that title is sarcastic). I had lunch with a good friend last Friday and I mentioned that to him, and he remained extremely skeptical.

This is intended as a follow-up/extension of Scott’s previously posted (and very excellent) piece on the very same topic.
I’ve mentioned on a couple of occasions what a joke I think it is that notorious left-wing pseudo-blog “Taking Down Words” is so highly “regarded” around the Indiana Blogosphere.
Regardless of what many think, it’s not the content I dis-agree with. I link to “Monticello“, a well-written blog edited by my close friend Joh Padgett, who is far-left enough to believe DailyKos is a credible website and who supports Chris Dodd for President. I subscribe to “Masson’s Blog“, which rarely posts any content I could agree with (he supports John Edwards for President, that should tell you all you need to know) but is well-written and worth a look.
I use the term “pseudo-blog” in reference to “TDW” for the very fact that I strongly feel Jen Wagner, it’s editor, blurs the line since she is the Communications Director for the Indiana Defeatocrat Party by day. While she has long been reviled by many bloggers for that connection, many in the media (including respected journalist Ruth Holladay) seem to think she’s some sort of sage for doing nothing more than posting Dan Parker’s press releases.
