You know the routine. Fred Sanford clutches his chest and look upwards as he scream “Hear that ‘Lizabeth? I’m coming to join ya honey!”
Well, that’s about the reaction I had when I saw the Ryerson Rag actually endorsed the Republican candidate for Southern Indiana’s 9th Congressional District.
From the Rag:
(Read more after the leap) (more…)
Seventh Congressional District candidate Gabrielle Campo has been working her district pretty hard since she was chosen to replace Jon Elrod on the November ballot. In what many see as an uphill battle for any Republican in the district that lies entirely in Marion County, Campo yard signs have been popping up everywhere. Now, in addition to those yard signs, she has billboards. The one below is near Allisonville and Binford Blvd. (picture taken by Mike Jezierski on his way to the podcast recording)
From a purely consultant perspective, this sign has its pluses and minuses. The minus is that it mentions her opponents name. First rule of thumb in political advertising, never mention your opponent if you don’t have to. The pluses, however (and this is why Andre Carson’s name is in the ad in the first place) is her tag line “More than a name”. Bam! That hits at the heart of why Andre was elected in the first place, because of his name. In addition, it shows voters how to scratch their ballot.
I don’t know just how many of these billboards are up around town, but after the podcast, Adam Longworth (aka Squidward) called me to say that there is also one at 10th and Mitthoeffer.
Hopefully we start seeing more around town.
Gabrielle Campo will kickoff her 2008 Indiana 7th Congressional District campaign on Saturday, August 9th at 9:00 AM. Location is 1109 N Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis.
Here’s an interview she recently recorded with the staff of Hoosier Access Radio
Gabrielle Campo announced at City Market this morning that she will be officially pursuing a bid for the 7th CD seat held by Andre Carson. Granted this is a long shot bid, considering the political climate and the truncated cycle in which she has to run (yeah, I know she has to get through a caucus first, but I hear she has an excellent chance), but Campo’s performance, as well as that of her volunteers, at the January slating convention for the Special Election left more than me impressed apparently.
But let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Does she have a chance against “Julia’s seed”? It’s going to be to easy for pundits to automatically dismiss her, but if the 2004 and 2006 Republican candidacies of Andy Horning and Eric Dickerson showed us anything, is that there is a significant portion of the 7th that is tired of being represented by a Carson. And not just Republicans, but plenty of Democrats too.
Campo has a few things in her favor. She’s young, she’s energetic, and as she proved at the convention, she has a good volunteer base. And as Mike noted earlier, she’s already moving beyond the Republican label. The flip side to that coin is that Andre has all of that and he’s never been a Republican.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I’m impressed with Campo. She has the ability to bring a fresh face and a fresh attitude to Marion County politics. But this race has burned out so many rising stars in the Marion County party, let’s hope that she’s not one of them.

GABRIELLE CAMPO ANNOUNCES BID FOR CONGRESS
Social Worker declares for 7th District race against Andre Carson
INDIANAPOLIS—Social Worker Gabrielle Campo announced her candidacy for Congress in Indiana’s Seventh Congressional District.
“I am proud to announce today that I am a candidate for Congress because, as someone who works for families every day, I know we need a Congressperson who offers real hope for change and truly represent all Hoosier families,” Campo said.
Campo makes her announcement in front of the City Market, a symbol of urban renewal that Campo pledges she would bring to Congress. “The City Market, much like Indianapolis, has a rich history, but in recent times, has been neglected. However, community leaders and local government worked together to enable the City Market experience a new revival. It is the type of collaboration I want to bring to Washington and the type of leadership we need more of in the Seventh District.”
“I am running because I believe this district cannot stand for status quo. I will fight for policies that keep money in your hands, create jobs for your families and improve education for your children. I offer you a new type of leadership; one driven with passion to empower individuals, families, and communities.” Campo said.
Campo has dedicated her career to servant leadership and direct service. As a social worker, Campo has coordinated youth programs helping children in Low-income families, managing post-adoption cases, working on publications dealing with issues facing Hoosier families, and serving on many local committees, including the Indiana Disproportionality Committee, the Indiana Coalition to Improve Adolescent Health, and the Marion County Underage Binge Drinking Task Force. Campo is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the International Society of Child Indicators.
