Jim Banks Signs Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Columbia City – Candidate for State Senate District 17 Jim Banks signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge today to never support tax increases if he is elected to the Indiana General Assembly.  The Taxpayer Protection Pledge is sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform and can be found at www.ATR.org.

The pledge states “I, Jim Banks, pledge to the taxpayers of the 17th District of the State of Indiana that I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.” Banks joins seven current Indiana State Senators and over 1100 legislators nationally who have signed the taxpayer pledge.

“When I ran for Whitley County Council I committed to the voters I would work against raising taxes and would strive to cut spending,” said Banks, who currently serves as a Whitley County Councilman At-Large.  “I kept my word and am signing this pledge today to make the same commitment to fiscal responsibility if I am fortunate enough to serve my district in the Indiana State Senate.”

In November the three Republican state Senate candidates in District 17 completed questionnaires from the Allen County Right to Life seeking information about their individual positions on a number of critical pro-life issues.  The questions asked were straightforward and two of the candidates did a solid job of providing clear answers.  Reviewing the final essay question, however, one would probably have to conclude that Jim Banks, an experienced pro-family and pro-life advocate with national experience, provided the most thorough and persuasive explanation of his pro-life philosophy.*

Candidate Tom Wall, currently a Huntington County Commissioner, checked “unsure” in responding to two of the questions on his questionnaire.  Each of the questions he marked this way were very simple questions dealing with two common pro-life issues faced by legislators around the country.  Anyone familiar with the cursory elements of the pro-life position and philosophy would have been able to make a final judgment about his or her support of the position stated in the question.

The first area of uncertainty for Wall was the matter of conscience clause legislation that protects pharmacists from being legally liable for refusing to fill out prescriptions for abortion inducing products.  This issue has come up in several states, including neighboring Illinois, and pharmacists have had to face a choice between violating their conscience and assuming serious liability for their refusal to comply with a consumer’s request.  In Indiana legislation has been introduced in recent sessions of the General Assembly to protect pro-life Hoosier pharmacists from this morally and professionally difficult choice.

6a010536b40d6e970c0120a5dca3a2970b-120wiIn a move that recognizes his opponent’s, Jim Banks, true conservative values, Ron Fusselman today announced he will be withdrawing from the Indiana State Senate District 17 race and turning his attention to challenging State Representative Dan Leonard for the District 50 State Representative seat.

“I started this journey to become your State Senator with the hopes and aspirations of bringing true conservative change to the General Assembly.  Over time, I have come recognize that the race to replace Senator Dillon has two true grass roots, conservative candidates.  Therefore, my talents and resources could be more effectively put to use challenging a State Representative in Dan Leonard that does not hold the same conservative values and is beholden to special interest groups,” Fusselman said.

“So today, I am announcing I will be amending my campaign to reflect my withdrawal from the State Senate race and focus on challenging State Representative Dan Leonard for the Republican nomination for State Representative, District 50.  I will also be supporting Jim Banks to replace Senator Gary “Doc” Dillon as your next State Senator,” Fusselman added.

“I welcome Ron’s decision and wish him luck in his future political endeavors,’ Banks said of Fusselman’s decision.

Lately you have seen me post about Jim Banks on his endorsements he has been reigning in lately! You can read them here, here and here. And he received another endorsement today from Wabash Mayor Robert Vanlandingham! You can read the full story here:

Mayor of Wabash Endorses Jim Banks for State Senate

(Wabash) – Wabash Mayor Robert Vanlandingham today announced his support of Jim Banks in his campaign for the Republican nomination for the Indiana State Senate in District 17.  Mayor Vanlandingham is a resident of the District and he is currently serving his second term as the mayor of the City of Wabash.

Mayor Vanlandingham cited Jim Banks record as a fiscal conservative, his service as a community leader and county council member among the reasons for his support.  However he specifically cited Jim Banks commitment to economic development in all areas of the state and the district.  He is especially supportive of Jim’s commitment to create conditions that support private investment and job creation in the rural areas of the District 17.

“Jim’s spent a great deal of time in the District studying the issues and has demonstrated his commitment to every county in the district” said Vanlandingham.  He added “Jim’s conservative credentials match up very well with the views of the people of Wabash and the state.  At this time nothing is more important than balancing the budget of the state and supporting efforts to revitalize and rebuild the rural economy that has suffered so due to our dependence upon the automobile industry.  I believe that Jim Banks is the best choice to assume the mantel of Doc Dillon and the best choice to keep us moving in the right direction.”

Banks, 30, currently serves as an at-large member of Whitley County Council, Whitley County Republican Chairman and Third District Republican Vice-Chairman.  Banks is the Director of Business Development at The Hagerman Group, a 101-year old general contractor and construction management company headquartered in Fort Wayne. Before joining The Hagerman Group, Banks owned and managed a public affairs firm for five years. Prior to that, he worked in the Public Policy Department at Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he helped advance pro-family values across the nation.

Banks serves on several boards including Northeast Indiana Regional Workforce Development, Columbia City Chamber of Commerce, Fort Wayne Area Builders and Contractors Association Government Affairs Committee, Whitley County Historical Society and the Columbia City Rotary Club.

Banks and his wife, Amanda, live in Columbia City where Jim was born and raised before attending and graduating from Indiana University. They are the parents of a daughter, Lillian, born in September.  They are members of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Columbia City.

Leading Pro-Family Group Endorses Jim Banks for State Senator!

(Indianapolis, IN) – The American Family Association of Indiana PAC announced that it has endorsed Jim Banks for State Senator in Indiana Senate District 17.  Hoosiers have witnessed enormous changes during 2009 with an economic collapse, historic government takeovers of private industries, massive and unprecedented federal spending and the promotion all sorts of left-of-center political agendas coming from Washington, DC. When the 2010 elections occur, AFA of Indiana PAC predicts that tens of thousands of Hoosiers will be looking for candidates who still hold firm to the common sense values of the heartland of America. Jim Banks is one of those candidates who will consistently represent the conservative values of Hoosiers in his State Senate district.

“Those families who care about the future of traditional marriage, the state of the family, the sanctity of life, and are troubled by the hostile, sex-saturated culture in which children are raised, should take note of the candidacy of Jim Banks,” said AFA of Indiana PAC president, Micah Clark.

Born and raised in Whitley County, Jim Banks has also served on the Whitley County Council where he has a conservative record of opposing tax increases and placing the interests of his constituents above special interests. Jim and his wife Amanda are new parents and they understand the challenges facing Hoosier families. “Jim will be a pro-family and a pro-life vote in the Indiana Senate, just as retiring District 17 Senator Gary Dillon has always been,” Clark noted.

“I strongly encourage Republican voters in Whitley, Huntington, Wabash, Grant, Kosciusko and Allen Counties to support Jim Banks for Indiana State Senate District 17 in the May primary, Clark said.

The AFA of Indiana Political Action Committee was formed in March 2006 for the purpose of educating voters about candidates who embrace traditional values and issues that impact families, churches and communities.

This morning Jim Banks who is running for SD 17 here in Indiana. Just got another endorsement this time from The Patriots Project. Here is the press release that was sent to me this morning……

THE PATRIOTS PROJECT ENDORSES JIM BANKS

Conservative Political Action Committee provides key endorsement in Indiana legislative

race for State Senate District 17

(Granger) The Patriots’ Project, in its first public endorsement of a candidate, has decided to throw its support behind Jim Banks, an outspoken fiscal and conservative voice in Northern Indiana.  “We have evaluated the candidates in the District 17 State Senate Primary and have determined that there is no question that Jim Banks has the strongest conservative record and will best represent conservatives in the Indiana General Assembly,” stated Angela Faulkner, President of The Patriots’ Project. The Patriots’ Project took into account Banks’ solid record of cutting wasteful government spending while on the Whitley County Council and his stalwart commitment to ensuring the proper role of government.

Faulkner also applauded his dedication to traditional values while working at Focus on the Family. He has been consistently adamant on pro-life and 2nd Amendment issues, at times taking on people within his own party to defend these rights.

Besides being the conservative answer to liberal groups like MoveOn.org, The Patriots’ Project is a 501(c)(4) organization which primarily focuses on nonpartisan education and advocacy on vital state and national issues. The Patriot’s Project Political Action Committee (PAC) primarily helps elect candidates who reflect their conservative values and ideals.

Consider supporting this great Conservative!

Today State Senate hopeful Jim Banks received an endorsement from State Rep Jackie Walorski. She had this to say about Jim and his strong Conservative Values:

From Indiana conservative leader State Representative Jackie Walorski :

“Jim Banks is the real deal when it comes to conservative champions in the State of Indiana. He works tirelessly with a passion rarely seen in politics. If we want to maintain our traditional Midwestern values we  are going to need people like Jim representing us. His energy and enthusiasm will help Indiana  usher in a new generation of conservative leaders to the General Assembly.”

Congrats to Jim for receiving this endorsement. She is correct in her assessment on Jim and his strong Conservative Values. If you would like to know more about Jim and his State Senate run you can go to his website here.

The Senate District 17 candidates will debate live at the Merillat Centre for Arts on the campus of Huntington College and broadcast here on Hoosier Access!

The forum will include Whitley County Councilman Jim Banks, Huntington resident and Coffee D’Vine owner Ron Fusselman, and Huntington County Commission President Tom Wall, as well as any candidate that is announced prior to the forum.

Dr. Dwight Brautigam, professor of history and chair of the Department of History and Political Science, will host the event, with Gary L. Snyder of HuntingtonPolitics.com and Kris Underwood, radio personality, acting as the candidate moderator and the audience moderator, respectively.

Scheduled start time of the debate is 7:00pm.

Yet another hard-earned boost comes in for Jim Banks and his bid to win the Republican nomination in Senate District 17.  After getting the endorsements of Congressman Mark Souder and Marion Mayor Wayne Seybold, Senator Dillion is going to endorse Banks as his replacement in the district.  According to one source, the endorsement will come at a hog roast the Senator is planning for October 24th.

It is a mark of his ability to work with people and advance common sense ideas that Jim Banks has gotten this kind of support this early in the race.  The other candidates working for the nomination will need to step it up a few notches if they hope to catch up and become competitive again.  For his part, Banks needs to keep working like he’s an underdog because in this district, the more you do in the Republican primary, the better it goes for you in the general election.

The credibility a candidate has before the public is an important thing.  For a candidate seeking a new office, building credibility in front of voters means, in part, highlighting the experience, skills, and knowledge that sets you apart from competitors.  A trio of candidates is currently vying for the open seat in Senate District 17 and one candidate is having a bit of a problem with his credibility.

Jim Banks, a Whitley County councilman, Tom Wall, a Huntington County commissioner, and Ron Fusselman, a businessman, have set their sights on replacing Sen. Doc Dillion.  Because the district is strongly Republican, the primary is probably going to be the toughest part of the battle that each candidate faces.  Banks has a strong edge over his opponents, having spent years working in politics and public policy before becoming an effective local elected official and joining a firm working in the construction industry.

Tom Wall also has a strong position from which he can work via his commissioner’s post in Huntington County.  However, his credentials were apparently not good enough for himself and his campaign must have felt the need to “fix” them a little so the public has more trust in the candidate.  In an interview with the Post and Mail of Whitley County, Wall claimed to be a part of an economic development board that, it turns out, never existed.  This fictitious regional body was apparently created out of thin air with its sole purpose being to help gain the confidence – the trust – of voters.  It is dishonest of Mr. Wall to try and ascribe to himself things that he did not do, and it is disrespectful of him to believe voters should be so gullible as to fall for his charade.

As if this one incident, which was discovered and made much of by this blog, were not enough, Mr. Wall has said a few other things lately that indicate that he may not be the right person to be serving in the state Senate.  In a biographical piece with the Post and Mail of Whitley County, Wall said:
