Word on the street is that there will be a rally on the Capitol in DC this Saturday at noon.  Details are scarce at the moment; but I plan on being there.  If you have any way of getting to DC this weekend, do it!

Today, Governor Mitch Daniels wrote a letter to Indiana House members to reject Health Care legislation. See the Governor gets it and understands what it will do to our country and state!

I am proud of my congressman, Rep. Dan Burton (IN-5) for rejecting this as well as Rep. Mike Pence (IN-6), Rep. Mark Souder (IN-3) and Rep. Steve Buyer (IN-4). It is the others that need to listen and take heed! Reps. Carson, Hill, Ellsworth and Donnelly are you listening????

Here is the letter that Gov. Daniels sent to the members of the Indiana Delegation

From the Rochester Sentinel:

President Barack Obama wants Congress to vote yes or no on a comprehensive reform measure from the Senate. Donnelly likes a lot about the bill, but its language on abortion is a “fatal flaw.” For him, it is a deal breaker. “I would not vote for it,” he said. He figures there will be a vote within a month or so. The abortion language is unpopular with “a significant” number of congressmen. It has the potential to kill the bill, he said.

And then there’s this:

Donnelly says that health reform is needed, and needed soon. The cost of Medicare is an “unsustainable cost burden” that will “overwhelm” the budget if nothing is done, he said. But, he will not vote for the measure approved in the Senate because of that abortion language.

Medicare is going to go bankrupt, and Donnelly’s solution is to expand Federal health care entitlements to be even bigger?

Some might ask why someone in Virginia cares anything about what is happening in Indiana’s Second Congressional district.  Well, I have several reasons why I am watching so closely.  First of all, I grew up in the South Bend area and I care about what goes on there.

Secondly, Joe Donnelly voted for the stimulus bill and the health care bill.  Representative Donnelly likes to bill himself as a moderate, mostly by playing up his pro-life stance in the heavily Catholic South Bend area; being fiscally conservative is not part of that moderate package.  Somehow he failed to see the crushing debt that a socialized health care system would create as a bad thing.  Furthermore, remember that stimulus bill that he was so sure was going to create jobs?  Remember Congress telling the American people that it was imperative that bill be passed immediately so money could get into the system? One-third of the money has been spent a year after the bill passed.  Sorry Joe, you’ve been duped; they are holding that money to be spent on highly publicized projects right before the November election to make incumbents look good.  It has nothing to do with creating jobs or economic recovery.  Anyone who voted for these two monstrous bills should be voted out of office.

But most of all, I like Jackie and think she would be an excellent addition to Congress.  I find her genuine and I share her views on issues I consider important (abortion, gun control, and states’ rights).

From the Courier-Journal:

U.S. Rep. Baron Hill, D-9th District, is among those that some Democrats are listing as possible candidates for U.S. Senate now that Evan Bayh has said he won’t seek re-election.

Hill, a former state lawmaker and businessman from Seymour, has served in the U.S. House for 10 of the past 12 years. He was defeated once – in 2004 – by Republican Mike Sodrel, who is vying for the chance to run against Hill again this year.

Hill also ran for U.S. Senate in 1990 when he lost to Republican Dan Coats, who is expected to enter this year’s race as well.

“I’m sure Baron Hill will be among several Democrats who will take a look at the race,” said Mike Jones, the Democrats’ 9th District chairman and a member of the party’s state central committee.

Jones said U.S. Reps Joe Donnelly, D-2nd District, and Brad Ellsworth, D-8th District, would also be possible candidates.

“But that creates more questions about their seats,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any question that the Democrats have several people that would have the capacity to wage a campaign for U.S. Senate. But there are other question marks about what happens next.”

Hill is out of the country on a week-long trip military-hosted trip. At the request of the military and because of security concerns, Hill’s office said it cannot disclose the trip itinerary.

Hill’s spokeswoman, Katie Moreau, said Monday that she has no way of reaching the congressman.

“We honestly never spoke about this before he left,” she said.

Unless a Democrat can collect the 4,500 signatures necessary to get on the primary ballot by Tuesday – something political observers said would be nearly impossible – the Indiana Democratic Party’s central committee will fill the vacancy on the ballot after the primary.

Former state Democratic chairman Kip Tew said Monday that he expects Hill will be among the candidates the committee will consider.

But he also named former state attorney general Joe Hogsett, former Indianapolis mayor Bart Peterson, Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel and Ellsworth as possibilities.

“We have a pretty good bench on our side,” Tew said.

House Speaker Pat Bauer, D-South Bend, said Monday he is not interested in running.

“I’d rather support someone else,” he said.

But Bauer said he was too stunned by the news that Bayh wouldn’t run to speculate about a replacement.

Baron picked a bad time to go overseas for a photo op, given that he’s out of contact for a week and Brad Ellsworth is already itching to run.

There’s also the tiny matter of who will get nominated for Congress by the Democrats if either Hill or Ellsworth (or Donnelly, for that matter) chooses to run. Baron Hill faces primary opponents. Ellsworth and Donnelly (currently) do not. Insignificant though they may be, the mere presence on the ballot of Hill’s opponents prevents the Democrats from backfilling the ballot vacancy with a serious candidate unless another (serious) candidate files by Friday at noon. That is not the case in the 2nd or the 8th.

Although she’s not a formally declared candidate yet, State Rep. Jackie Walorski (R) is preparing to mount a formidable campaign against incumbent blue dog Congressman Joe Donnelly (D) in the 2nd District.  For months the rumors have circulated around the northern part of the district that if there was one Republican Donnelly did not want to face, it was Walorski.  A proven and tough fighter, Jackie can rouse a crowd, impress donors, earn media attention, and carry legislation forward like someone who should be in Congress.  Maybe that’s one of the reasons why she’s running.

At the end of last October, a detailed open records information request on Rep. Walorski’s official affairs was sent to the Clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives.  The request originated with a Kevin McKeon in Washington D.C. with the highly original e-mail address of kevin.mckeon+walorskirequest@gmail.com.  With an address like that you’ve got to wonder how long this guy’s been planning to make a request, or if he’s just really, really interested in what an Indiana State Representative is doing.

Roll call vote is here.

Baron’s statement is here.

Donnelly’s statement is here.

Ellsworth, as of this posting, is hiding (probably still begging Right-to-Life to leave him alone) and hasn’t put a statement out yet.

Poor Baron. He realized too late that he’s probably about to have an opponent capable of holding him accountable for his liberal votes. He hasn’t had that so far.

Accountability’s coming, Baron, and it’s driving a semi truck.

All five Indiana Democrats in the House voted for government run health care.  All four Republicans voted against.

See the health care vote here.

Just remember Congressman Brad Ellsworth brokered the very deal that allowed this bill to come up for a vote.

So is State Representative Jackie Walorski really considering a run against Joe Donnelly in the Indiana 2nd Congressional? Sources in the 2nd CD confirm that Walorski will be filing paperwork on Wednesday to form a candidate committee. While this is not an official announcement, this administrative filing does allow her to start raising and spending money to explore her options.  At this time, it would appear to be a bold first step, but still too early to say she is actually running. But I’m also of the opinion that if a person forms a candidate or “exploratory” committee to run for office, chances are that person is actually running.

Walorski would be taking a chance at giving up a safe State House seat to run against Donnelly, who crushed Luke Puckett in 2008. But Jackie is a proven fundraiser, with a very loyal base who knows how to get out the vote.

Walorski’s potential entry into the race was also rumored to be contingent on NRCC backing. Does this mean the 2nd is about to get some national attention? Looks like we’ll find out soon enough.

More on this as it develops.
