I know the day’s not over, but it’s Friday. The afternoon is dragging for you more than that time you were forced to watch “An Inconvenient Truth” by your liberal professor or *gasp* liberal friends. So take some time to check out these good reads of the day just in case you missed them.

Lack of Substance (Indiana Fred Heads - as a fellow Fred Head, I appreciate Joel Harris keeping tabs on our nation’s best hope for a conservative as our next president. Here he takes aim at those who say FDT is all flash and no substance)

State Senator Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) has is right when she says “Any attempt by the legislature to start taxing the now-exempt property owned by churches and other not-for-profits would set off a lobbying effort unlike any seen before in the state Legislature” in today’s Indianapolis Star. It would seem that if this issue even came up in the next General Assembly that lawmakers would target churches for the brunt of the attack. But let’s remember that other non-profits, such as the homeless shelter, Wheeler Mission, in downtown Indy, Crisis Pregnancy Centers around the state and the largest domestic abuse center in Indianapolis, the Julian Center would fall under the taxing authority if the state decided to tax previously untaxed property because of their charitable status.
As I was checking the local blogs I saw a great commentary on this particular subject over at Polis Politics. Just in case some of you weren’t able to catch it, I thought the issue was important enough that I post it here as well. It’s a good read.

Of all the films in the John McClain saga, Die Hard With A Vengeance has perhaps the best developed plot. In the film, McClain and the NYPD are led on several goose chases, framed by riddles, in order to prevent terrorist attacks. When McClain confronts a Manhattan youth trying to steal from a street vendor, he realizes that these riddles and goose chases were simply a ruse to distract law enforcement while the terrorists stole gold from the federal reserve bank.
We couldn’t help but think of this scene while contemplating the recent hullabaloo over untaxed property in Marion County. On Sunday, the Indianapolis Star ran an article revealing there is $2.7 billion in untaxed property in the county. Most of this property belongs to churches and non-profits, with the rest belonging to property in TIF districts. Over the next few days, several of our fellow bloggers weighed in, essentially calling for the taxation of churches and non-profits or service fees for using police and fire services.

How ’bout that?! Greg Goode is a formal candidate for Congress for only three days before he gets national attention from Red State. Not only that, he was tops on the list in a post entitled “House 08: Republican Challengers Step Up“

IN-08 (Bush 62%): Freshman Dem Ellsworth will face a challenge from former Rep. Kerns (R-IN) Chief of Staff Greg Goode (R). Follow this race at Paint The 8th Red.

Props to Paint the 8th Red for, not only getting national exposure themselves, but also for also helping to get that exposure onto Greg Goode. He’s ready to give”Pretty Boy” Brad Ellsworth a run for his money, but he’s going to need our help to take back a district that was represented admirably by former Congressman John Hostettler. Keep an eye on the 8th!
A special thanks go to Kenn Gividen for his post promoting Hoosier Access. We appreciate the love and attention and hope to provide more of the serious, intellectual and sometimes quirky analysis of the issues facing Hoosiers.
